Eat to Survive | Day 6 of The Whole 30

The Whole 30

I’ve come down from being hangry (angry-hungry, or hungry-angry.. I’m not sure which way it goes.) I think I just needed a few days to get readjusted to my body. I’m learning that with The Whole 30, there’s a need to not only eat a lot to nourish your body, but to also eat a variety of foods. Man (and woman) cannot live on apples, bananas, and eggs alone. I’m trying to infuse more into my system to keep me from being cranky. Continue Reading

Missing Breakfast is a like going on a Suicide Mission | Day 5 of the Whole 30

The Whole 30

I woke up late today. Which for most people wouldn’t be a big deal. You could grab a doughnut on the way into work, or a muffin at the supermarket. But on The Whole 30 on day 5, missing breakfast is like going on a suicide mission. I’m left with no resources because I had planned to cook my breakfast, and had I not grabbed a banana and apple, I would have been starved until lunch time. Continue Reading

Aches & Pains | Day 3 of the Whole 30

I feel like my body is falling apart. Seriously. The spaces in between my fingers hurt, like achy hurt. And my back, well, my body is not having it. I can’t seem to get comfortable to save my life and Tylenol is doing nothing for me.
No, I’m not sick. Or at least I don’t think I am. I think it’s The Whole 30. I read about this, and I did not prepare myself mentally enough for it. The first week where your boday decides, we-are-going-to-fight-this.
The Whole 30 tells me it’s my fault. That my body is detoxing, basically getting rid of all the junk I’ve been eating over the years. They tell me this could last for days, but a hangover-feel for that long might just put me over the edge. I’m holding on, dear readers, but if I get angry, don’t be alarmed. It’s just the Doritos, Ben & Jerry’s, loaves of fresh French Bread, and blocks of cheddar cheese talking as they leave my body. Can I go back to bed yet?

Blueberry Smoothie | Day 1 of The Whole 30

I almost backed out of The Whole 30 today. Not because I wanted to eat sugar or have a Mexican feast with rice, but because I had these intense stomach cramps around 4 p.m. today. I got really nervous that something was wrong. And since I had semi-started The Whole 30 a few days prior, I was scared my stomach was reacting to not having carbs in it.

I’m not telling you this to scare you, I’m telling you as a learning moment. Because I realized two things when I sat down and analyzed my day. 1. I was not drinking enough water. And 2. I hadn’t eaten enough food.

Because I was so focused on eating veggies, meats, and fruits, I totally forgot the lack of calories I was consuming by not having carbs in my diet. And because I wasn’t quenching my carb intake with water, I hadn’t realized I wasn’t drinking enough water either. A large protein-packed snack and plenty of water later and I was all fixed.

I probably should have realized when I only had a blueberry smoothie (no dairy) that I wasn’t getting enough foods in my belly. But I do have to share the blueberry smoothie with you, because it was delicious and I’m so glad that Andy made it for me. I have never had almond milk before and was pleasantly surprised at how great it tasted. (You can make your own if you can’t find one without sweetener in it.) Win-win for being healthy, too. This was our recipe, not from The Whole 30, but it follows all the guidelines, I believe.
