Cookie Books, An Awesome Gift To Me

I may have never win the state lottery, but I think I won the work Secret Santa “lottery” when I unwrapped these cookie books (and craft books). Let me back up…

At work we’ve been getting gifts to our secret santas and yesterday we gave our final gift. I have been painstakingly digging into my recipient’s past for ideas. Thank goodness for friends at work or I would have been at a loss. I hope she liked everything, because I know I’m loving what I got!

My secret santa had strategically decorated my gift with cookie cutters tied to the package. And as any former librarian would react, I couldn’t be happier with the two fabulous book finds my secret santa gave me! One book on cookies and another with crafting ideas. She know me all too well (may have been her snooping around my blog) and I have already cracked the covers and started plotting my attack on the kitchen. Be prepared people, I will be in a cookie frenzy for the foreseeing future.

Vegucated – Documentary Review

I will preface this with I do eat meat, and I have seen enough educational material from PETA (who I think should stop doing naked campaigns) and other organizations to know what is going on around the world. Yes, it makes me sick to think that animals are treated unfairly, but I still find myself eating hamburgers and chicken nuggets. I’ve gone weeks without meat before, I’ve downed my dairy intake at other points, and I’ve increased my veggie intake.

Okay, here we go. I was sitting around my apartment the other day and flipping through documentaries on Netflix. I love watching documentaries, I’ve even made my own. Learning about new things and further educating myself is why I became a journalist. So even if you don’t believe in what others think, I believe you should learn about it.

Vegetarian? Learn why meat eaters eat pork chops. Carnivorous diner? Learn why vegans make the efforts to be meat free and alter their lifestyles. I think the same thing should be said for evolutionists and creationists, Republicans and Democrats, and atheists and people with strong religious views. You don’t have to agree with the other half, just know where they’re coming from.

So when I see a documentary on veganism, I’m hooked. I found Vegucated on Netflix. Three New Yorkers agree to go on a vegan diet for six weeks. For those of you who don’t know, it’s way more than just eating only veggies. You’d be surprised. It’s quirky, educational, yet keeps my attention the whole time. That’s hard to do, because I feel it’s very easy to lose your viewers with a documentary. I really do recommend you find it and watch it. Preview here:

Marshmallows – Chocolate Peanut Butter

Start with the basics.. oh yeah, and peanut butter too

I had a craving. I wanted peanut butter, chocolate, and marshmallows. So what do you do when you have a craving like that? Make something with all of it! So I melted some chocolate in the microwave until it was smooth, dipped in a marshmallow and put it on some wax paper. Into the fridge for 10 minutes and I pulled them back out. Microwaved some peanut butter in the microwave until it was smooth and dipped the marshmallows in that. Back into the fridge for 5 minutes. And then I had a snack! Nom nom!

Elvis Would Be Proud – Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Pie

Or at least I hope Elvis would be proud of my chocolate banana peanut butter pie. I mean, I am at least.

You see, I’ve always loved peanut butter chocolate pie. Something only my Godfather is allowed to make and mostly is only consumed on Thanksgiving. So I decided to do a different spin on it, also with a shortcut that makes it so much simpler. You see, there are these things called pre-made graham cracker crusts. Normally, I use those, but seeing as I made a crust from scratch recently…. well, we’re going to use that one now. (See recipe here.) But don’t feel obligated to use that recipe, graham cracker is just as good.

Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Pie

For Mix:
1 package of banana instant pudding mix
1 package of chocolate instant pudding mix
4 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter
Milk

Place four tablespoons of creamy peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl. In 15 second increments, zap the peanut butter, stirring between each cycle until smooth. Pour in the bottom of the pie crust.

In a separate bowl, pour the banana and chocolate pudding mixes. Stir those together and then add milk and stir that until mixed. Pour into pie pan, smooth top.

You can also top with whip cream (I love Ready Whip) right before serving. Those looking for something fancy can cut pieces of banana and place eight around the pie (one for each slice).
