Halloween – Mary Poppins Costume

For my last birthday, Andy took me to see Saving Mr. Banks. I needed a Disney fix and to be honest, as an adult, I’m not as keen on the cartoons as I used to be. Mostly because they’re not as handcrafted as they used to be. Everything is so animated that I think we’re losing something.

And I’m not saying that the new movies are not bad, clearly it takes a long time to craft these works. I’m just saying, I’m a fan of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast.

So back to Mary Poppins. I was super excited when Disney announced their Saving Mr. Banks movie. And I loved it in theaters. I love it so much that I’ve actually watched it a few times since my birthday. And I know all the facts are completely right, but I still love the idea of the behind-the-scenes of how it was made and the story behind the books.

So that kind of inspired me to create this Mary Poppins costume for Halloween. Yes, again I’m using real fashion for this look. A bit more upscale, but if you have the items in your closet, go for it! Let me know what you want to see next.

Halloween – Pirate Costume

Halloween is just around the corner. I can sense it. And as a nod to my all-time favorite holiday. I’m going to be making inspiration boards for Halloween, starting with a pirate costume.

Two years ago I went through my closet and managed to find enough goods to make my own pirate costume (see here). I lucked out with having a corset I was able to wear backwards, a sheer white top, and a ton of costume gold jewelry. I threw on a scarf into my messy, sort of curled hair, and there you have it, instant pirate!

I’m trying something different this year by going fashion forward on these looks instead of homemade. So let me know what you think and I’d love to see your versions of my looks. You can click through the picture to my Polyvore pirate board, or check out the items below the picture.

Halloween Costumes – Flapper

I think I kinda pulled this off well.

Okay, so I kinda cheated on this one. I might have found this flapper dress at a thrift tore for $9 and bought it. Just because I didn’t make the dress doesn’t mean it wasn’t a great costume, though. So that’s where I will stress here that you shouldn’t be afraid of thrift stores. Yes, not every thrift store will have some remarkable find, BUT you never know what you will find when you do go in and snoop around. I found this dress tucked in the back of a rack by some very ’80s dresses that no one was buying. And when I saw the price tag, I also died. I’ve seen dresses like this listed upwards of $100 online that aren’t even as good as this one. (Also, going to thrift stores means you’re being eco-friendly and reusing clothes!! Go Green!)

The best part was I only had to grab some jewelry out of my box, a long black necklace I got at H&M years ago (it’s plastic, nothing fancy) and this great red and black necklace/earring set that my cousin made years ago. Yes, I have tons of jewelry that just sits around, but on the bright side, these came in hand when I needed them most.

For my hair, I did a faux bob, I found awesome directions here: Check it out! Way easier than I ever thought. Plus I got a ton of complements on having short hair, who would have known? I used this lace I found at Joann Fabrics and wrapped it around my faux bob and pinned it into place to work as a headband.

The more you have, the thicker your “headband” will look.

Threw on some black low pumps and there you go! Flapper in a jiff. I even wore this to work, changed on my lunch break before our Halloween party and loved it. I wonder if I could get away with wearing this on a regular day… hmmmm

They never smiled in photos back then, so I didn’t either.

Halloween Party Planning – Graveyard Dirt

Image

You’d never know that Milano cookies make the perfect gravestones, but they do!

Oh goodness, I love this one! My co-worker actually did this, but it came out great and had to share it! And it’s quick (as long as you remember to use instant pudding.) 🙂

What you’ll need:

Two boxes of instant chocolate pudding
Milk for the pudding
Milano cookies
Black icing (the kind you can buy in the cake aisle at the grocery store that is already made for you)
Oreo cookies
Duff Chocolate Rocks
Gummy Worms

Get a very large serving bowl, glass of course, so you can see the dirt. Pour your two already made batches of instant chocolate pudding in the bottom, dropping gummy worms in the mix as you go.

On the side, bash some Oreos in a bag to get them all crumbly. See exhibit A:

Get your anger out in a healthy way. Bash this.

Pour the crumbled Oreos on top of the pudding.

Next, write “RIP” on the top half of the milano cookies. You can then stick them into the “dirt” you’ve created. Top with some of the Duff chocolate rocks and you’ve got yourself a tasty graveyard! Party ready and a hit with the kids.
